What Is an NFA Gun Trust?
An NFA gun trust(also called a firearms trust or suppressor trust) is a specialized legal entity designed to hold National Firearms Act items — suppressors, short-barreled rifles (SBRs), short-barreled shotguns (SBSs), machine guns, destructive devices, and any other weapons (AOWs).
Unlike individual registration, a gun trust allows multiple trustees to legally possess your NFA items. This solves the critical constructive possession problem: without a trust, your spouse simply having access to your gun safe containing a suppressor is a federal felony carrying up to 10 years in prison.
A gun trust also provides estate planning benefits, privacy protections, and a structured framework for passing firearms to the next generation without probate.
